Mercury History

The first project is certainly implemented in the department of the Ford development, it has become a model Mercury Eight or Super Ford, which had a 95hp and engine design that was the most streamlined of the time. It was the first car, which was first developed using a clay model. In 1930 it was first released, and up to 1938 the production has already reached 17,000 units.

This dramatic increase in production was the result of an unexpected increase in demand, and by 1940, Ford has struggled to keep up. The numbers reached 155,000 units. But soon all stopped because of World War II in 1942 and 1945.

In 1946, production resumed, but with a slightly modified version of the Eight 1942 model year. By 1950, there was 1 million Mercury cars that could be seen on the roads. Now is the time to push ahead with the production of an innovative point of view, and that is why Mercury launched its first automatic transmission Merc-O-Matic on all of its models since 1951. The car also has undergone several changes in style. They were the new headlamps with a metallic rim, reactive depression on the bonnet and the wheel in the aviation style.

In the mid-50s Mercury cars were somewhat rowdy, and evidence of this is the fact that Mercury made-to-order has been shown in the film «Rebel Without a Cause» with the participation of James Dean. By the end of the decade, Mercury has also taken part in the race.

In 1960, two new models have been released: Comet and Meteor. While Comet has a stylish small car, the Meteor was a small car, pointing to the fact that America was becoming less. Comet showed their character in the Daytona Speedway Track, where it has shown remarkable endurance when fleet Mercury «got" up to 100,000 units at an average speed of 105 miles / h. When the 60s came to an end, the new car has been added to the lineup - Cougar, who joined the family Mercury in 1967.

When the crisis hit oil 70, Mercury said the introduction of more small cars manufactured in Europe, Mercury Capri and Bobcat. But this does not mean that the old model no longer sold. On the other hand, converted Cougar XR-7 has caused incredible growth in sales. Sales volumes for the Mercury continued to grow in the 80s.

In the 80 Mercury tried to capture most of the market and came up with new models, Lynx and Grand Marquis. But the car that stood out in this decade, became a Mercury Sable in 1986. He had a very low drag coefficient, which made him effective in the fuel consumption issue.

Expansion of Mercury's still going on throughout the 90s. This time it was a minivan that was added to the production, Mercury Villager. And in a short time in 1997. Mountaineer SUV she appeared, who managed to win over new market.

With the dawn of the new century Mercury sought to improve performance as well as fuel efficiency and emissions. In addition, in order to unify the brand, all the cars were different design features such as the front grille and an updated label icon. New models of the period included the Milan and Mariner.

Sales began to decline, and many people are wondering about the future of the brand. Ford quickly dispelled rumors of a "funeral» Mercury and in 2008 announced that it will make the company a part of its production of small cars.
